Open Question: What do I need to do to get my GED?

Do I HAVE to take GED classes to get my GED? Or can I just go take the test? I read that they have you take a pre-test for each subject, then if you need to improve in something you will need to take the classes. If you don't, then you can go ahead and take the test.
